American Art

Our American art collection contains about 1000 paintings, 400 sculptures and 4,000 works on paper. In addition to the celebrated Hudson River School collection, other highlights include 18th-century portraits by Ralph Earl and John Singleton Copley, 19th-century still lifes by the Peale family, late 19th century trompe l’oeil paintings, and American modernism, with important paintings by Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keefe, and Andrew Wyeth. In addition, the sculpture collection includes works by noted artists such as Horatio Greenough, Harriet Hosmer, Gaston Lachaise, Elie Nadelman, Paul Manship, and Alexander Calder.

Works on paper by American artists were recently featured in a special exhibition, American Moderns on Paper: Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art (October 2, 2010-January 17, 2011). To view these works, video commentary from curators, conservators, and related archival materials visit the exhibition microsite.
