The Wadsworth Atheneum’s collection of European art, which includes nearly nine hundred paintings and eight hundred drawings, counts as one of the finest in the United States. Ranging from gilded icons of the Renaissance to notable works by Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondrian, the collection contains masterpieces of Italian, French and Spanish art. Renowned paintings by Caravaggio, Orazio Gentileschi, and Bernardo Strozzi highlight the exceptionally strong collection of seventeenth-century Italian works. The Museum also has a distinguished group of French paintings, with a particular emphasis on nineteenth-century Barbizon and Impressionist artists. Known for having been among the forerunners in the acquisition of Surrealist paintings, the Wadsworth Atheneum has early masterpieces by Max Ernst, Joan Miró, and Salvador Dali, and is also recognized internationally for its Serge Lifar Collection of Ballets Russes costume and set designs.
