About John Davey
John Davey has been a collector of vintage Hollywood Costumes and Vintage Fashion and Haute Couture for the past 15 years. Starting in 1999 with his first purchase of an unknown Lana Turner negligee and an unknown Sophia Loren knit dress which he managed to identify, he is fast becoming one of the leading experts in this genre. His interest in Hollywood costume history led him to an interest in fashion and textile history and preservation. He presently owns and curates over 500 vintage Hollywood film costumes and celebrity apparel and over 800 pieces of haute couture and finer vintage ready to wear. He has exhibited parts of his collection in numerous private functions as well as lecturing for the Boston Fashion Council and the Initiatives in Art & Culture Conference in New York City. Most recently, he has exhibited his costumes at the Katharine Hepburn Museum in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, the Hollywood Museum in the retrospective Loretta Young: Hollywood Legend, and is part of the upcoming Hollywood Glamour: Fashion and Jewelry from the Silver Screen exhibition at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in September 2014.

John is the Library Manager at the law firm of Alston & Bird LLP in New York City and moonlights also as a classical opera singer and antique appraiser.

The Nutcracker Suite & Spicy_clarice_webDance: The Nutcracker Suite & SpicyHartford-based professional contemporary ballet company CONNetic Dance is best known for its annual production of The Nutcracker Suite & Spicy, an original and entertaining take on the beloved holiday classic. 2014 marks the 5th annual performance of the production, which has fast become a Hartford holiday tradition and draws dance-loving audiences from NYC and Boston.

The Nutcracker Suite & Spicy features the CONNetic Dance’s signature style of choreography by Director Carolyn Paine. Using a fusion of athletic dance forms including tap, jazz, and hip hop, the production is seasoned with a signature sense of humor. The curtain opens on an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, featuring a break dancing doll brought by suave Drosselmeyer, and an athletic and dizzying snow ball scene with acrobatic dancing using pearly white exercise balls.

In Act II, the audience meets sexy hip hop Sugar Rum and CONNetic Dance’s signature Florettes in a high kicking, Rockettes-inspired Waltz of the Flowers, followed by a battle between Club Rat and the Nutcracker in the Club of Sweet Temptations. It is all set to a fun compilation of diverse music inspired by Tchaikovsky’s classic score.

The Nutcracker Suite & Spicy has a great sense of humor, creative choreography, and is accessible and enjoyable for all. It is a show as truly diverse as the city from which it hails, with talented professional dancers from varied backgrounds performing choreography from all forms of dance. Hartford.com said of last year’s performance, “If you’re not into the classic version of The Nutcracker, this version will tickle your Sugar Plums.”

The production’s backdrop features a magical winter Hartford skyline painting by Connecticut artist Nina Salazar, also the museum’s Teaching Artist.
