Docent Memorial Lecture: Alexander Calder
Apr 29 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Calder_Cover_WEBDocent Memorial Lecture: Alexander Calder: Innovations at the Wadsworth Atheneum: Alexander Calder and the Wadsworth share a long history together. From his formative years to the installation of Stegosaurus in 1973 and later, Calder was honored by the museum through the acquisition of works.

Dr. Joan Marter, Board of Governors Professor of Art History at Rutgers University, will present Calder’s works in the context of his relationship with the Wadsworth and Hartford over the course of his artistic career. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Thanks to A. Everett “Chick” Austin, the museum’s legendary director, Calder designed a kinetic set for a performance of Socrates, a musical composition by Erik Satie. Performed in Hartford in 1936, it was re-created at New York’s Beacon Theater in 1977. Dr. Marter will present Calder’s original sketches for the project, photographs of the later performance, as well as sculptures and other works in the context of his relationship with the museum over the course of his artistic career.

This lecture is sponsored by the Docent Council of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.
