Film: The Dog
Jun 7 @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

TheDogFilm: The Dog: John Wojtowicz’s attempt to rob a Brooklyn bank to pay for his lover’s gender reassignment surgery was immortalized in Sidney Lumet’s 1975 classic Dog Day Afternoon starring Al Pacino, who won an Oscar nod for his performance. However the true story of John Wojtowicz remains all but unknown. The Dog captures John, for the first time, telling his story in his own unique, offensive, hilarious and heartbreaking way. Directed by Allison Berg & François Keraudren. 2013. USA. 100 min.

Screening preceded by short film Nomansland.

Tru Love: Tru, 37, is a serial bed-hopping lesbian who cannot commit to a relationship or a job for long. Restless by nature and wounded by the past, she seems to live from pillar to post, from mattress to mattress, bobbing along through life with no anchor to ground her. She gets by on her wits, her considerable good looks and charm — but at her age, it is all starting to wear a little thin. Then she meets Alice, 60, a beautiful widow, who has come to town at the last minute to visit her daughter Suzanne, a too-busy corporate lawyer. Suzanne, 35, is Tru’s friend. When Tru meets Alice, sparks fly and Alice and Tru begin forging an unlikely friendship… and more. Directed by Kate Johnston & Shauna MacDonald. 2013. Canada. 94 min.

Free admission & family art activities from 10am – 5pm.

JUNETEENTH FAMILY DAY: Fresh Faces of Freedom: Join us to celebrate African American art and culture and to commemorate Juneteenth, an important date in history that marks the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the enslaved in Galveston, Texas, first learned of their freedom – two and a half years after the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Explore artwork of African American artists in the collection and The Amistad Center‘s traveling display, Fresh Faces of Youth. Create a fresh face of your own using kente cloth patterns, pose for a picture, explore faces in art with a docent, and learn about historical figures in the abolitionist movement with performances by the Ray of Hope project. This free, fun-filled family event includes something for everyone!

A FREE shuttle bus will run between the museum, the Mark Twain House, the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, and ImPACT Fest in Bushnell Park.

Facebook event here.
