Second Saturdays: Picturing Freedom

Second Saturdays: Picturing Freedom: What does freedom look like? Explore images from The Amistad Center for Art & Culture’s exhibition Emancipation! and find symbols of freedom. Design your own picture of freedom and pose with the American flag, then join in a jazz-inspired dance performance by EQuilibrium Dance Theatre! Free admission 10 am – 1 pm.

Explore art with your family, encourage creativity, and expand your imagination through conversation and discovery. Each program includes hands-on art projects, tours for families, live music, and engaging fun through film, theater and dance. Join us every month year-round!

MLK Community Day

MLK Day 2014 at the Wadsworth copyMartin Luther King, Jr. Community Day: Time Capsule: What was the world like in 1964, when the Civil Rights Act was passed? What has changed (and what hasn’t) in the 50 years since then? Join us for a free family-friendly celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. Explore art and history through interactive gallery tours, live music from the 1960s, hands-on art-making activities, a collaborative time capsule project and much more! 11 am & 2 pm: Don’t miss the final performance of Freedom: In 3 Acts, an original production by Bated Breath Theatre Company.

Use acrylic paints to create colorful, candy-inspired pop art paintings!

Mini Vinyl Hit Singles
Design a mini vinyl album cover while listening to 60s hits played by DJs from The Deft Collective.

Community Time Capsule
Contribute to a Time Capsule that will be stored in our archives. What do you want people to remember 50 years from now?

This Little Light of Mine
Create a “Little Light” votive candle holder in preparation for the Procession at 12:30 and 3:30 pm!

Still Life Drawing
Explore still life paintings from our collection and create a still life of your own with teaching artist Jennifer Lazaroff. 

Performances:

11 am & 2 pm: Freedom in 3 Acts by Bated Breath Theatre Company
Experience an original theater piece created by Bated Breath Theatre Company in partnership with The Amistad Center for Art & Culture. Enjoy free popcorn and hot chocolate!

12:30 & 3:30 pm: This Little Light of Mine Gospel Music Procession
Join Victoria Ackerman, cantor and music teacher, in a gospel sing-along and procession around the museum galleries. Don’t forget your “Little Light”!

Docent-guided Tours:

10:30 & 11:30 am: Eyes on Art Family Tour
Experience art that captures people and moments in time in this docent-led tour for all ages.

1 & 2:30 pm: Time Capsule Tour
Explore how people, events and history are interpreted in art in this docent-led tour of the collection and the exhibition Emancipation!

Enjoy free on street parking all day! Additional parking is available on weekdays for $3 at Trumbull-on-the-Park Garage.

Second Saturdays: Living Art: Have you ever imagined the people in a work of art coming to life?

Create a character inspired by a work you see in our galleries and stay for the Connecticut premiere of animated film The Painting, a quest story that brings to life the characters who “live” in a painting hanging in an artist’s studio.

Listen to children and young adult stories read by authors from the Connecticut Authors and Publishers Association throughout the morning.

About the Connecticut Authors and Publishers Association: The Connecticut Authors and Publishers Association (CAPA) is a non-profit organization that helps authors through education and promotion, while working to raise awareness about our local authors and encourage reading and writing in the community. It is a statewide organization with about 300 members, representing published authors, writers, local publishers and author services. CAPA’s authors represent all genres, including books for children and young adults, as well as a wide variety of adult fiction and non-fiction. They have four chapters which meet in Avon, Shelton, Groton and Mansfield, with a fourth in the process of being formed in the Danbury/Waterbury area.

HYAR_postcard_2014_front41st Hartford Youth Art Renaissance: Celebrate the 41st anniversary of the museum’s partnership with the Hartford Public School District to produce the Hartford Youth Art Renaissance, an exhibition of student artwork from kindergarten – grade 12 created by Hartford Public School students. View a selection of over 100 works of art on display at the Hartford Public Library downtown branch, and explore the grand prizewinners on view at the museum.

We encourage you to talk with your families about what you see and feel. Use your mobile device to access the audio guide and listen to student artists reflect on their masterpieces. We hope that you leave feeling inspired by the creativity and ingenuity of the youth of our community.
