Hartford Youth Art Renaissance
April 20–May 19, 2013
In 2013 we celebrate our ongoing partnership with the Hartford Public School system by hosting the 40th annual Hartford Youth Art Renaissance (HYAR) student exhibition. HYAR was created in 1973 as a community art contest and we have proudly co-sponsored it since 1980.
On view in our permanent collection galleries now through Sunday, May 19, 2013, this year’s HYAR exhibition is a true display of the artistic excellence of Hartford Public School students, featuring over 100 two and three-dimensional works of art created by students in prekindergarten through twelfth grade. Artworks were individually selected by teachers from each participating school.
This year, a companion audio tour will allow visitors to hear student artists and their art teachers explain the inspiration for their displayed object. Student artworks may be previewed here.
On Saturday, May 4, an awards and recognition ceremony will take place at the museum to honor all student participants, their families, and their art teachers. Two high school students, who have demonstrated exceptional creative talents via their submitted artistic portfolio, will receive a scholarship to attend the Hartford Art School’s Summer High School Visual Program. This month-long experience is designed to further develop students’ portfolios for college admissions through a diverse range of studio course offerings and associated visits to the museum. The scholarship covers the cost of the entire program, including tuition, materials, and transportation. In addition to these covered expenses, scholarship recipients will receive a weekly stipend.
Following the awards ceremony on May 4, we will host a special 40th Anniversary Celebration of HYAR from 2:30-4:30 pm. The event will feature student performances, art-making activities, an arts educator exhibition, a video documentary, and refreshments. Admission is free for all Hartford Public School students and their families.
The Hartford Youth Art Renaissance program continues to be at the forefront of our Community Engagement Initiative, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to the City of Hartford and its youth.
