Partnership with Connecticut’s Old State House

Separated by just one city block, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and Connecticut’s Old State House represent the vibrant civic, cultural, and artistic history of our community. Join the conversation between these two Hartford landmarks by participating in the programs for schools and teachers listed below.

John Trumbull’s Revolutionary War Series
Due to our ongoing renovation, the series of Revolutionary War paintings by John Trumbull (1756–1843) is now on view at the Old State House. For more information, call (860) 522-6766.

The Place Where You Live Multisite Visit (grades 3–12)
Students embrace the messages found in objects and architecture illustrating local and state history as they discover their place within this cultural narrative. Visits include hour-long tours at both the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Old State House.

Teachers may select from the following tour topics:

Wadsworth Atheneum: Connecticut People and Places or American Art
Old State House: These Walls Do Talk: Art at the Old State House

Availability & Fees
Wednesday–Friday | 9:30am–3:30pm
School Groups: $4/student or chaperone (Wadsworth Atheneum) plus $3/student (Old State House)
Hartford schools may call to see if they quality for free admission.

Election Day Workshop
[Art] History in Your Own Backyard
What makes Connecticut unique? How are the stories of our state’s past communicated through material culture? How do they link to national storylines? Encounter the history just outside your backdoor in this multisite workshop for classroom and art educators. Teachers will explore the intersection between local, state, and national history and visual culture with gallery sessions taught by museum educators at the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Old State House.

Tuesday, November 4 | 9am–3:15pm
Fees: $40; $35 for museum, CAEA, and CCSS members; $30 for groups of five or more. Lunch included.
Certificates of Connecticut Professional Development Completion available. Four hours on task.
