School Tour Themes

Scheduling Your Visit: All school visits must have a confirmed appointment. To book a visit with our Group Visit Associate, call (860) 838-4046. Reservations must be made at least three weeks in advance. Space is limited; groups without a scheduled appointment may not be able to enter the museum.

$3 is added to all admission prices during our two annual fundraisers, Festival of Trees & Traditions (December 5–14, 2014) and Fine Art & Flowers (May 1-3, 2015). Fees are subject to change.

Themes: Tour themes are appropriate for PreK – 12 school groups. Special exhibitions can be woven into most tour offerings. All docent-guided visits last one hour, unless otherwise specified.

Use our online reservation form to submit a request for any of the tours below. Please note that the submission of your reservation request does not guarantee your tour date and time until you receive a confirmation by email or post.

Story Book Hour (grades PreK and K)
Students enjoy the adventure of connecting reading and words to art through the creative window of stories, myths, and tall tales.

Learning To Look (grades K 8)
Students learn about the elements of art, artistic vocabulary, and the museum experience through careful looking, critical thinking, and lively discussion.

Step into the Story (grades K – 12)
Students examine imagery for narrative elements, learning to “read” and interpret works of art through character, setting, and plot. This tour is available beginning February 2015.

Connecticut People & Places (grades 3  8)
Students experience Connecticut’s rich history and culture through the events, people, places, and ideas depicted and interpreted in works of art in the collection, many of which were made by Connecticut artists.

American Art (grades 3 – 12)
Students learn to look at visual imagery through an exploration of American paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts representing the colonial period, the Revolutionary and the Civil Wars, westward expansion, the early twentieth century, and the contemporary moment.

Art & Writing (grades 3 – 12)
Students exercise observational, critical thinking, oral presentation, and writing skills, using art as a catalyst. A brief writing activity is included. This tour lasts 1 hour 15 minutes.

Artwise (grades 9 – 12)
Students decode visual imagery, explore innovations in art, discuss the context of artworks, and experience the museum in this “Learning to Look” tour for high school students.

Self-guided Visits (grades PreK – 12)
Teachers may lead their groups in the galleries, but docent-guided tours have priority. Teachers are requested to identify the galleries where they will tour. For specifications, please call (860) 838-4046.
