Conrad Shawcross / MATRIX 179

June 21, 2018 — October 21, 2018

Conrad Shawcross makes monumental works that push the boundaries of physics, technology, and geometry. MATRIX 179 marks the British artist’s first museum exhibition in the Americas, and features the immense sculpture Monolith (Optic) (2016) on Main Street in front of the Wadsworth Atheneum. The accompanying display will include additional sculptures, models, related drawings, and the dynamic installation of a new light machine. These enigmatic objects demonstrate the artist’s ongoing interest in the intersection of philosophy and scientific theory.

Monolith (Optic) is a long-term installation, and will remain on view beyond the MATRIX 179 exhibition.

A related, adjacent installation explores the enduring legacy of outdoor sculpture in Hartford.
