Encounters

Encounters

Encounters is a collaboration between the University of Connecticut Humanities Institute, the Hartford Public Library, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and The Amistad Center for Art & Culture to create a space for open public conversations about a range of pressing current events, art, and social issues. Themes generally relate to special exhibitions and the collections of the Wadsworth and the Amistad Center.  Conversations are guided by experts on the subject and short readings made available in advance of the discussion.

Past topics of conversation include institution-building through an analysis of Andrew Carnegie’s Gospel of Wealth; the Voting Rights Act; slave narratives, incarceration and injustice; and the parameters of citizenship based on a reading of Claudia Rankine’s Citizen.
