The American Imagists Collection at the National Museum of American Illustration will be our first stop for a docent led tour. This museum devoted exclusively to American Illustration is housed in a Beaux-Art adaptation of an early eighteenth century French Chateau located in Newport, Rhode Island. The American Imagists Collection includes the largest collections of original art by J.C. Leyendecker and Maxfield Parish and the second largest by Norman Rockwell as well as paintings by N.C. Wyeth and more than 150 others displayed in a unique union of art and architecture. By way of definition, “illustration” consists of artwork created to be reproduced in books, magazines, newspapers, and advertisements. NMAI is a historic property and is not handicapped accessible. Walkers and canes are acceptable.

Following the NMAI tour, we will walk across to the Olmsted Park for an arborist led tour. The grounds of Olmsted Park designed by the first American landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, were formerly the site of the Stoneacre Mansion. It is truly the last proper open space on Bellevue Avenue, a grand promenade of the Golden Age and the “most elegant street in America.”

Lunch will follow at the Red Parrott, a historic Newport restaurant.*

$110; $95 members; includes transportation, admission, guided tour, and gratuities.

*Cost for lunch is not included. You will be able to make your own selections.
