Free admission all day!
Join us for a free, family-friendly Community Day and explore the dark side—and light side—of art! Go stargazing in the galleries, create your own cyanotype print, watch a dance performance, and discover the art and science of photography. See the full schedule of activities below!
Presented in partnership with Envisionfest Hartford.
PERFORMANCE
STARLAB Planetarium | Hourly from 11am–3pm
Join staff from The Children’s Museum in the inflatable STARLAB planetarium. Discover constellations in the night sky and learn about the stories that stars tell. Then, go on a star search in the galleries to discover more constellations! Each performance is 30-45 minutes, and can accommodate up to 30 people.
Black Boy Jungle | 1pm & 2pm
Experience an excerpt of Tnmot Aztro’s Black Boy Jungle, a contemporary dance work that focuses on the claiming (and re-claiming) of our unique identities. This site-specific performance explores the theme of “Light & Dark” through dance, poetry, music, and altar displays in the historic Morgan Great Hall.
Guitar Under the Arts | 2:45–4:45pm
Guitar soloists from Guitar Under the Stars perform among works of art while members from Sonia Plumb Dance Company create a unique improvised dance. Keyla Mejia performs Spanish & Latin American music from 2:45–3:45pm. Nick Cutroneo performs Baroque & Classical Era music from 3:45–4:45pm.
ART-MAKING
Camera Obscura in the City | All Day!
Learn about the camera obscura, or “dark room,” which some artists used as a tool to create highly accurate drawings. Step inside a person-sized camera obscura, then created a working miniature version to take home.
Cyanotypes: Sun Prints | All Day!
Arrange natural and recycled materials to produce a one-of-a-kind design, then use light from the sun to create your own cyanotype (also called a “sun print”).
Light & Dark Landscapes | All Day!
Inspired by elements of light and dark in Hale Woodruff’s linocut prints, create a black and white collage landscape to tell a story or portray a scene from nature.
Dramatic Charcoal Sketching | All Day!
Use charcoal and charcoal pencils to created moody sketches inspired by still life paintings and objects from the Cabinet of Art and Curiosity.
