Fall Community Day: Past, Present, Future

An all-ages celebration of our new exhibition, Monsters & Myths. Explore myths and stories from the past, use imagination to design a monster for today, and participate in a spectacular Surrealist Parade around the museum. Museum admission is free all day.

Art and Games
All day!

Monster Masks
Work with local artists to create a monster mask inspired by the Surrealist Ball. Wear your mask to the Monster Parade at 3pm! Avery Court.

Surreal Posters
Get active and design a surreal work of art using words and images. Then make your contribution to our giant surreal communal poster. Morgan Great Hall

Giant Fun with Chess
Play jumbo sized Chess, the Surrealists’ favorite board game. Morgan Great Hall Foyer

Surreal Games
Play some of the word and picture games that the Surrealists played. Connections Gallery, Avery 3

Typewriter Thoughts
Take a moment and type out your answers to questions asked by For Freedom: The 50 State Initiative. Sit at our writer’s desk and let the power of words move through your fingertips.

 

Performances

All day: Examining Life YouTube channel
               Engage in a philosophical conversation with local YouTuber, Amanda Schneider.
               Questions: Are there limits to human creativity? Why does art matter? You might be featured on her channel, Examining Life.
               Morgan Great Hall area

11am & 2pm:  Moscow Ballet’s New Horizons: A Children’s Program for Life
                         Let peace inspire you! Join world-class Russian dancer Mykhailo Shcherbakov of the Moscow Ballet for an interactive, family-friendly performance.
                         Aetna Theater

3pm:  Surrealist Monster Parade
           Bring your monster masks and surreal posters for a Surrealist Monster Parade! Join larger-than-life puppets by Anne Cubberly and express your inner monster.
           Meet in Avery Court

 

Extras!

All Day:  Auerbach Art Library Book Sale
                 Visit the library to browse fantastic titles at great prices. All proceeds go to the library and the preservation of its collections. Cash or check only.

Noon:  The Ice Cream for a Dream truck will be parked outside the museum and waiting to serve visitors free ice cream (while supplies last)!

Tours

Tours meet by the Museum Shop

10:30-11am: ABC Story Time
                        Make connections between art and books during this docent-guided tour for young children and accompanying adults.

11-12pm: Ask About Art: Monster & Myths
                 Drop in anytime from 11-12pm and talk to a docent about what you see.

11:30am & 1pm: Highlights Tour
                               Join a docent for a Highlights Tour of the permanent collection.                         

2:30-3:30pm: Strike a Pose
                          Join a docent for the special theme tour, Strike a Pose: Portraits from The Amistad Center and Wadsworth Atheneum.

4-4:30pm: 3-in-30 Highlights
                    Join a docent for a 3-in-30 Highlights Tour—that’s three works of art to explore in 30 minutes!
