A porcelain modeler at Meissen, Germany, for 44 years, Johann Joachim Kaendler revolutionized the craft in 18th century Europe. His naturalistic animals, dynamic figural groups, and elegant wares became known as independent sculptures. Vanessa Sigalas, Dangremond Research Fellow for European Art and Decorative Arts, and curator of an upcoming special exhibition devoted to Kaendler’s work, introduces this exceptional artist.
