Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Day | Reflections

Create alongside Afrocosmologies featured artists Ed Johnetta Miller and Carl Joe Williams in two collaborative art-making experiences. Live music, performances, and tours for all ages celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Museum admission is free all day, 10am–5pm.

Presented in partnership with The Amistad Center for Art & Culture.

Martin Luther King Jr. Community Day is supported by an anonymous funder. Program supplies are generously donated by S&S Worldwide.

 

SCHEDULE

ART MAKING: 10AM-4PM

COMMUNITY QUILT | Work alongside Afrocosmologies featured artist Ed Johnetta Miller and use a variety of colors, shapes and textures to create a community quilt in Avery Court. 

FOUND OBJECTS | Join Afrocosmologies featured artist Carl Joe Williams in the Hartford Courant Room and collage or paint onto some unexpected items.

WORDS OF WISDOM BOOKMARKS | Listen to Martin Luther King Jr.’s words as you create a bookmark that highlights some of his power phrases. 

ACTION! | What do you want people to know about your community? Create a protest sign in Colt Hallway that demonstrates the change you want to see.

PERFORMANCES (MORGAN GREAT HALL)

12pm-1pm | Listen to storyteller Andre Keitt – “The Greatheart Griot” recite powerful stories about African American figures. 

1:30pm-2pm | Watch a youth performance from Hartford’s Act Up! 

TOURS

10:30-11am | ABCs: ART, BOOKS, & CONNECTIONS
Make connections between art and books during this docent-guided tour for young children and accompanying adults.

11:30am-noon | EYES ON ART FAMILY TOUR
Discover artwork from the collection and more during this docent-led tour for all ages.
