Giorgione's "La Vecchia"

5pm: Reception
6pm: Lecture

Preeminent scholar of Italian Renaissance art John Paoletti, Emeritus William R. Kenan Professor of the Humanities at Wesleyan University, discusses Giorgione’s La Vecchia. Giorgione was an innovator, experimenting with the new technique of oil painting evolving in Venice around 1500, and he was the first to employ the concept of poesia—something akin to our modern notion of “poetry”—in his paintings. La Vecchia exists between portrait and allegory, between realistic detail and painterly surface. Its small size requires close looking, and its visual clues, both obvious and disguised, call for imaginative interpretation. By examining the multiple possibilities of interpretation, Paoletti untangles the paradoxes of La Vecchia. Free.
