The term atheneum derives from the name Athena, or Greek goddess of wisdom, who is associated with the owl, a symbol of knowledge. Join Community and Youth Programs Manager Marisely Gonzalez as she designs an animal relief using aluminum foil and markers.

Artist Paul Manship sculpted animals throughout his career, and the Rainey Gates at the Bronx Zoo in New York City is a landmark accomplishment of this work. The Great Horned Owl in the Wadsworth collection was likely created as a model or sketch for the owls featured on the zoo’s grand gate. Manship captured the bird perched on a stone or ground, gazing forward with intensity and awareness. With its lifelike plumage and powerful gaze, he captured the species’ individuality, leading one reviewer to say, “[the] animals are characters, if not portraits.”
