Chamber Concert: Arazzo Music Festival

The Wadsworth is pleased to host the season finale performance of the Arazzo Music Festival, a new initiative building community through musical performances here in Connecticut. Join Connecticut cellist and festival director Samuel DeCaprio as he performs an evening of string music in Morgan Great Hall with musicians from across the region. The program centers around Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s String Sextet in D minor “Souvenir de Florence”, Op. 70 (1890). Free with required registration.

Second Saturdays for Families: Hamilton and Hartford

Pop in on Saturday for free family fun! Explore the exhibition Hamilton: The Art of Remaking History and learn how fashions from the American Revolution have inspired the costumes for one of today’s most popular Broadway musicals. Try your hand at creating an accessory inspired by the works on view. Listen to storyteller Tammy Denease as she illustrates how access and circumstance impacted a person’s clothing during the American Revolution. Family-friendly tours take place at 12:15 & 1:30pm. Find the Ice Cream for a Dream truck, parked outside the museum from noon–2pm, for free ice cream while supplies last. Free admission from noon-2pm.

Naama Tsabar (MATRIX 189) and Laurie Anderson (MATRIX 46) engage performance and sound as pivotal components in their creative practices. Listen in as Tsabar and Anderson discuss how they use sound as a medium for artmaking, challenge the stereotypes of musical genres through experimentation, and reveal the feminist dialogues at play in their work. Conservator Talk with Allen Kosanovich: Ribalta’s "The Ecstasy of Saint Francis: The Vision of the Musical Angel"

Catalan painter Francisco Ribalta vividly captured religious images at the turn of the seventeenth century, positioning himself as one of the major figures of the early Baroque. Paintings conservator Allen Kosanovich examines an in-process treatment of Ribalta’s The Ecstasy of Saint Francis: The Vision of the Musical Angel (c. 1620–1625), discussing how these efforts address the results of four hundred years of aging and numerous restoration attempts. Artful Conversations for Members: Van Gogh’s Biography Through His Self-Portraits 

Vincent van Gogh’s 1887 Self-Portrait recently returned to the Wadsworth after joining fifteen of the artist’s self-portraits from collections around the world in a landmark exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery, London. For more than a century, these works have played a key role in our perception of the famous post-impressionist, his life, and his art. This special lunchtime presentation by Dr. Karen Serres, Curator of Paintings at the Courtauld, gives Wadsworth members the chance to look anew at this beloved painting in our collection. Artist Stephanie Syjuco uses photography as a means of reframing the museum collection and exploring America’s colonial history in her MATRIX exhibition. Syjuco will discuss her process of working with the museum’s registration, photography, and conservation departments, bringing to light the complexities of collection stewardship and the role art plays in shaping our view of history. Second Saturdays for Families: Latinx Heritage Day

Join us at the museum to celebrate Latinx heritage and culture with art making, storytelling, and performances. Admission is free noon-2 pm on Second Saturdays. Design a Carnival mask with Multi-Cultural Learning Center Bomba de AquíParticipate in an interactive dance presentation by Proyecto Cimarron, a Puerto Rican Bomba Performance Group based in New Haven. Watch students from Marinera Dance Academy demonstrate traditional Peruvian dance. Please note: Due to The Hartford Marathon, parking bans and road closures will be in effect throughout the day on Saturday, October 8, 2022. 

Únase a nosotros en el museo para celebrar el patrimonio y la cultura latinx con la creación de arte, la narración de cuentos y las actuaciones. Diseña una máscara de Carnaval con el Centro de Aprendizaje Multicultural Bomba de Aquí. Participe en una presentación de danza interactiva a cargo del Proyecto Cimarrón, un grupo puertorriqueño de interpretación de la bomba con sede en New Haven. Vea a los alumnos de la Academia de Danza Marinera realizar una demostración de danza tradicional peruana. Tenga en cuenta: Debido al Maratón de Hartford, el estacionamiento estará prohibido y las calles estarán cerradas todo el día del sábado 8 de octubre de 2022.

Conversation with an Artist: Amber Cowan

From the dustbin of American design, Amber Cowan creates glass sculptures that tell stories of self-discovery, escapism, and loneliness. Come meet this internationally acclaimed glass artist and see how she uses recycled, upcycled, and second-life American pressed glass to create her diorama-style sculptures through various techniques such as flameworking, hot-sculpting, and glassblowing. Free with required reservation.

Lawn Party: Glass Rodeo

Glass artists come together for a rodeo-style Hot Shop glass fest! Take part in an afternoon full of demonstrations by local glassblowers who master nature’s most volatile medium. Bring your crew for artmaking, live music, and a chance to step close to the fire (but not too close!) as we celebrate makers during this free lawn party. 

Program supplies are generously donated by S&S Worldwide. We acknowledge the permission of the Trustees of the Ella Burr McManus Trust for the use of the Alfred E. Burr Memorial.
