One of Robert Mapplethorpe’s most remarkable achievements was to begin to disentangle sex, gender and sexuality, even in images of the same model. In this talk, art historian Jonathan D. Katz, Director of Doctoral Program in Visual Studies at the University of Buffalo, explores how Mapplethorpe was able to make nude, bare flesh do what in Warhol’s art generally required costumes and wigs.
