WEAVING THE MYTH OF PSYCHE
September 13, 2013–February 16, 2014
Weaving the Myth of Psyche featured the Wadsworth Atheneum’s five rare 17th and 18th century tapestries that depict the story of the mythological Psyche. Made of wool, silk, and gilded-silver, their designs were based on 15th century engravings, part of a series produced in Paris around 1660.
While exploring the allegory of Psyche as told in the second century Latin novel Metamorphoses, Weaving the Myth of Psyche addressed the history and use of tapestries through its narrative reinterpretation during the Renaissance and Baroque eras.
